Show Report 1    Show Report 2    Show Report 3

Early during the show Dave Bunk and Dan & Diana Weinrich had a large warehouse sale.  I arrived a bit early to see what was available but it did not take long for many people to arrive to plunder the thousands of minerals that were available.

The outside of Dave's warehouse is unassuming.

There were scores of flats and drawers filled with minerals for folks to look at.

Dave in his office working up invoices from the numerous specimens sold that morning.

The was no particular theme to the items available at Dave's ware house but there were very many specimens worth getting.  I would encourage any collector to get to Denver early to take advantage of the sale that Dave and the Weinrich's offer.  Lots of good stuff.

At the Holiday Inn show I visited with K.C Pandy of Superb minerals.  He had the usual array of fantastic zeolites from the Deccan Trapp basalts.  He also had some attractive water clear apophyllites set on crystals of scolecite from Mahodri near Nasik, Mahastra, India.  I picked up three specimens that had nice appeal.

Two of the specimens I purchased from Superb Minerals. Both are thumbnail sized.

Isaias Casanova had a few specimens of unusual pyrite specimens set on matrix of black sphalerite and green drusy quartz from the 19th of September mine in Madan, Rhodope Mts., Bulgaria.  This is the same locality that produced the very odd skeletal galena crystals.  Best as I can deduct without my goniometer these are severely distorted pyritohedral forms.

Two of the specimens Isaias had for sale. Both cabinet sized pieces.

While running around at the Holiday Inn I was offered this remarkable crystal of elbaite from the Himalaya mine in San Diego County.  The termination is unusual and the color also more intense than the typical specimen found at the mine.  Jesse Fisher thought it was probably mined during the early 1980s.  Anyway, I bought the specimen and will have it posted later this weekend.

This is a 10 x 3 x 2.5 cm doubly terminated crystal of elbaite from the Himalaya Mine.

How's this for a linarite specimen?  Cal Graeber had this one available at the main show at the Merchandise Mart for $18,000. Crystals over 2.5 cm from the Grand Reef mine in Arizona.

Crystals of linarite to 2.5 cm. Mercy!

Dan & Diana Weinrich had this enormous calcite crystal on display in their booth at the main show.  The specimen is 18 to 20 cm in height and looks like a giant crystal of beryl at first glance. It is from Wuzhou, Guangxi, China.

Enormous crystal of very lustrous calcite.

Jeff Fast (JBF Minerals) had several crystals of the rare manganese beryllium phosphate vayrynenite.  The bladed crystals have beautiful salmon color. Jeff had specimen that I thought was very interesting, though expensive, a crystal with an adjoined eosphorite crystal.  These come from Shengus, Haramosh mountains, Northern Areas, Pakistan.

The crystal on the left is one I purchased while the one on the right is owned by Jeff Fast. It is also his photo.

French dealer Francois Lietard had a nice selection of water clear smoky quartz crystals found this past summer in France. They are from Arrete des Rochassiers, Talefre Basin, Mt. Blanc near Chamonix, France.  Smoky gems.  Most had well defined s and x faces.  I usually do not get quartz for resale but these were quite exceptional.

A 5 cm gem crystal of smoky quartz.

Arizona dealer Marcus Origlieri had a new find of the rare mineral nifontovite available at the show. These come from Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico.  The best specimens were gone by the time I saw them but I did get one specimen to photograph.  The quality of these crystals is trully exceptional for the species.  The largest crystals exceeded  5 cm in length - they were rather costly, but worth it.

A 1.7 cm crystal of gem nifontovite.

One of the great things about mineral shows is that you really have no idea what will show up out of the blue.  While walking the halls I was approached by a collector who had a flat of kermesite from the now defunct Chinese locality in Caiwa Mine, Danfeng County, Shaanxi China.  The kermesite looks black, but is actually deep red when back lit. The crystal sides show cleavage faces where attached to adjacent crystals or are complete singles. Most of the terminations are best described as soft or fuzzy - I know not a technical word but it gets the point acrosss.  This locality produced the largest known crystals of this oxide and sulfide of antimony.  Several specimens in this lot also have a valentinite association. The name Kermesite is derived from the Persian word "qurmizq" which translates to crimson.

One of the finest in the lot - an 8 x 6 x 3.5 cluster of intergrown crystals.

As usual Kristalle had some fine specimens of gold available from the Eagle's Nest mine in Placer County, California.  I picked out several of them and will post them at a future date as most need some follow-up work to enhance the appearance.

An exceptional specimen of crystallized gold from the Eagle's Nest mine. Many fine sharp and lustrous
octahedral crystals are found on this specimen.  This is one of several I bought from Kristalle.

Speaking of gold, check out this YouTube video I shot of a 25 cm specimen of gold on display in the Collector's Edge room at the main show. It is named the El Fuego from the Colorado Quartz mine in Mariposa County, California.

Here's the view coming from the main show towards the Holiday Inn Show - downtown Denver.
