Two more things to report on from Denver that were new or sort of new. One is wulfenite from Pakistan.  Dudley Blauwet (Mountain Minerals) had one more small stash of wulfenite from the Kharan Mountains in Baluchistan, Pakistan.  These are canary yellow crystals on gossanous matrix.  Dudley had a small group of these at the Tucson Show this past February that I purchased from him then so they are not new per se but they were a part of that very small find.  I also heard from Dudley that he recently received his visa to travel to Pakistan. To hear stories of some experiences he's had there and other places in this volatile region fills me with a sense of awe to know he's going back there.  Good luck Dudley but I suspect you know what most of us don't - that the world is not as scary a place as it seems...

Crystals to just under 1 cm on gossan from the Pakistan find.

The other item of note here is a new find of canary yellow chrysoberyl from Madagascar.  Laurent Thomas (Polychrome Minerals) was moving about the Denver Show and was able to track me down to show me specimens from this new find from Tsitondroina, Fianarantsoa, Madagascar.  The matrix for the specimens consists of diopside, pinkish scapolite and taramite. The crystals are found both as singles and as the better known twins.  Scheelite has also been found in the matrix of this material.  Laurent says he hopes to have more of these available in Munich.

This year the theme of the show was Creede, Colorado. This area was a very rich silver producer as well as lead and zinc.  The following are examples of minerals from Creede that caught my attention.  There were more that I photographed but using ambient lighting has its challenges and quite a few of them ended up a blurry mess unfortunately.

A drawing from one of the mines at Creede in the David Bates case.

A cabinet specimen of native silver about 6 cm across in the Denver Museum of Natural Science case.

A 30 cm specimen of baryte in the Denver Museum of Natural Science case.
I still have a difficult time spelling this mineral with a "Y"...

A 25+ cm specimen of baryte.

A 15+ cm specimen of galena.

Most of the display cases had minerals from places other than Creede.  The one that was just loaded with eye candy was that from the Mineral Association of Dallas (M.A.D.)  Every rock in it was a stunner. Below are just a few small number of the specimens in this mind blowing case...

The Smithsonian Institution had a case dedicated to the 100th anniversary of its Geology display which was opened March 17, 1910.  There were some great specimens in the display with cards detailing their acquisition to the museum also.

15+ cm native silver wire from Mexico.

A 5 cm specimen of clinoclase.

A 4 cm + specimen of finely crystallized gold from California.

Another incredible gold specimen from California about 4.5 cm across.

The Society of Mineral Museum Professional had a fine case of silver bearing minerals on display.  The 20+ cm silver from Kongsberg was the center piece in that case.

Chris Stefano put together a case of rare TN species.  I was happy to see one of my former pieces in his case too - the TN stibiotantalite. Here are five of the thirty or so specimens in Chris's case.

The California State Mining & Mineral Museum had this rich 5 cm caledonite and linarite from Darwin, Inyo county, California on display

Joe Dorris & Bryan Lees have been busy in the mountains west of Denver with a new group of Amazonite and Smoky Quartz specimens from the New Crystal Hunters Pocket in the Smoky Hawk mine in Teller County, Colorado.

The Cranbrook Institute of Science (Michigan's Museum of Natural History) had a very fine case of historical specimens on display!

An incredible crystallized copper from Michigan!

A big chunky piece of elbaite from the Tourmaline King mine, Pala, California

In center was this specimen of wulfenite collected by Ed Over in 1938 at the Red Cloud mine, La Paz Co., Arizona.

I thought it might marginally entertaining to take some photos of the trip home.  It is 1,239 miles from Denver to home in Trinity County and this takes at least two days to complete. I decided to retrace my trip home on US 50 across Utah and Nevada instead of using the Interstate system.  I left Denver about 4:00 pm of Sunday and got home about 3:00 pm on Tuesday.   Scenes along the way...

Fall is in the air near Aspen, Colorado along I-70.

Not all of Utah is breath taking... This is US 50 just west of Delta and not far from Topaz Mountain in Millard County.

The last range of mountains in Utah before entering Nevada along US 50.

US 50 at the Utah - Nevada state line on the way to Denver.

The same place heading west into Nevada.

After 12 hours in the car flat as a billiard table Fallon, Nevada will be my home for one night...

Back in California Hwy 44 offers a nice view of Mount Lassen.

At long last Trinity County is in view along Hwy 299!! 19 more miles to go!

This will do it for another Denver Show.  There were some interesting new things this time to report on and there were a great number of very fine specimens available.  As usual prices were all over the place.  But I got a sense that prices are starting to drop a bit for the lower range of the high end.  Those dealers with specimens from a recently obtained collection seemed to do well.  A few dealers told me that their sales were slow for the show.   Steve and I sold a lot of the newly cleaned benitoite and neptunite specimens in Steve's booth at the main show.  In general the market seems to be picking up overall.

I will be working on a large update of specimens I found at the Denver Show and will be posting a group of the new benitoite mine specimens in the coming week.  I will send out a note to my mailing list when the update is completed.

Thanks for checking in on what was new in Denver. I will be back again next year.

Cheers,
