Report 1   Report 2   Report 3  Report 4

October 31

At this time I have had a chance to talk with scores of people to find out what is new here at Munich.  The general consensus is that there is not much new but there are a fantastic number of excellent minerals available.  The trick is to find specimens that won't break a budget.  Prices are all over the place so it pays to take your time and shop around.  There are good bargains to be found here as at any show.

You may recall that I have been following the Tanzanian spessartine story for a while now having commented on it at Tucson and the East Coast Show this year.  Well, the spessartines are here too.  Several dealers have them but Jentsch Minerals has scads of them and they are quite reasonably priced.  Such that I decided to get some for the Munich Show update.

Two of the numerous spessartines flats available at Jentsch's.

Two of the specimens I purchased from Jentsch. A miniature on the left and a thumbnail grouping on the right.

Spanish dealer Luis Burillo had a few things of interest.  A new find of hubnerite on quartz from the Mundo mine, Huamachuco, La Libertad, Peru.  The crystals are dark black and brilliantly lustrous.  Quite strike in contrast to the quartz crystals.

Two specimens of the hubnerite with quartz.

He also had specimens from Panasqueira, Portugal - a few dozen specimens of apatite and other accessory minerals found at the mine such as arsenopyrite and wolframite.  I put together a selection of apatite specimens and will have them posted when I get back home.

Two specimens of Panasqueira apatite - a miniature on the left and a thumbnail specimen on the right.

Finally he had a dozen or so specimens of fluorite with green cores and and violet outer zones from the famous Huanzala mine in Peru.  I did not get any but they were quite impressive.

Two specimens of Panasqueira apatite - a miniature on the left and a thumbnail specimen on the right.

I saw a few Chinese dealers with the very attractive calcite and stibnite specimens that came out a year or so ago from

Dachang,
Qinglong County,
Guizhou Province,
China.  These are quite striking with the calcite forming tabular crystals twinned on the c-axis.  Stibnite is found included in and one the calcite crystals.  I scrounged up a few and will have them posted after my return to Weaverville.

Two specimens of the calcite and stibnite combinations.

Two British dealers had some nice specimens of botallackite from Cligga Head, Perranzabuloe, St. Agnes, Cornwall, England. These were found in April of 2007 and are the best of the species anyone has seen in a long time.  The dealers who had them are Ralph Sutcliffe and Simon Hidred.  I made a modest selection from both dealers and will have them available after my return home.

Two specimens of botallackite both cabinet sized.

A view of the locality where these bottalackite specimens were found.

More to come over the next few days from Munich!
