REPORT 1     REPORT 2     REPORT 3

October 30-31

The main entrance to the show on Saturday morning. Note the weather!!

I was able to track down the source for the new find of ilvaite from China.  They are from the Nang Dang Mine, Guang Xi Province, China.  They were brought to the show by Huan Qui Crystal Mineral Museum (many Chinese dealers use the word museum in their shop name so it should not be assumed that this is an actual museum of any sort).  The crystals are jet black and are prismatic in nature. They have the chisel shaped termination typical of all ilvaite crystals I have ever seen from anywhere else.  The crystals are actually quite large I would not be surprised to see even larger crystals surface in the future at Tucson and other future shows.

A 5.7 cm crystal of ilvaite from the new Chinese find.

Italian dealer Emanuele Marini had a new find of hambergite and liddicoatite from the Tampo'ny ilapa vein, Sahatany Valley, Ibity, Antsirabe, Madagascar.  The crystals are all floaters and are white to colorless.  There were a few nice liddicoatite specimens in this vein but I picked up only the one.

The group of hambergite specimens I obtained from Emanuele.

Emanuele also had this specimen of azurite from the Carbona mine in Sardinia, Italy that he
found for his collection.  It is not of Tsumeb caliber but it is stunner for this Italian locality.

Gunther Neumeier and Terry Huizing enjoying a glass in Wolfgang Wendel's booth. The
offering of a glass of wine creates a very relaxed atmosphere at the Munich Show.
Many dealers are very generous but I think Wolfgang might be the most generous!

I was happy to enjoy a fine supper with Marshall & Charlotte Sussman, Scott Werschky and Dan & Diana Weinrich one evening after the show.

While taking a break with John White he showed me a specimen of twinned orange kyanite from Loliondo, Tanzania.  Orange kyanite from here has been coming out for a while now but these crystallographic twins are something new and rather appealing.  Pedrarte of Portugal brought these to the show.  The terminations are very crude and I did not see any matrix specimens.  All of the specimens have the same twinning angle to produce these interesting v-shaped specimens.

A 3.3 cm specimen of the twinned, orange kyanites from Tanzania.

In the overseas section of the show in Hall A-6 I saw my old friend Haleem Kahn from Pakistan.  I have known Haleem since 1997 when I met him at the Tucson Show for the first time.  We both had dark hair back then... Anyway, Haleem had some very nice specimens of topaz from Katlang and other crystals of Pakistani minerals not often seen anymore including two gem crystals of varynenite and a whopper gem crystal of lazulite. I obtained them all from Haleem and will post them when I get back home.

A razor sharp 2.5 cm gem crystal of topaz from Katlang. Not cheap folks...

The 5.3 cm gem crystal of lazulite from Lailia, Northern Areas, Pakistan I obtained.

On the 30th Mindat.Org celebrated its tenth year of existence.  There was a nice turnout to mark the occasion.  It is possible the free beer, champagne and cake may have added to the draw but it was a lot of fun to put faces and names together for the first time.

The cake before it was dispersed.

The group of people around the Bode Booth.  Some familiar faces in this crowd...

While visiting with folks there Italian dealer and collector Giuseppe Agozzino approached to show me a specimen he had just found at the show. This is likely one of the best "nuggets" found here at the 2010 Munich Show.  A world class TN specimen of what looks like stalactitic dioptase from Tsumeb. I am pretty sure that the dolomite or calcite under the dioptase is a pseudomorph of mimetite crystals. Anyway Giuseppe paid an enormous sum of SIX EUROS for the specimen! I think he got had but everyone else who saw it pegged the value from anywhere between $2500 to a "reality free zone" sum of $20,000.  No one had ever seen anything like it before who was there. And, oh yes, Giuseppe is keeping this for his collection...duh...

The only word that comes to mind is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

I stopped by to see French dealer Alain Martaud who always has some interesting things and found three specimens of translucent to gem baveno twinned orthoclase from Niaslo, Basha Valley, Skardu, Baltistan, Pakistan.  The matrix specimens have associations of quartz and biotite.  These are not from a new find but I have not seen any of them for some time so I bought all three.

An 8.2 cm crystal of gemmy orthoclase.

Also in Alain's display was this knock out pink fluorite from Mt. Blanc, Chamonix, France.
The price in dollars is $25,900 in case you are wondering...

Ok, this will wrap it up for the important new things and other minerals of interest that I found here at the 2010 Munich Show.  I will have one more report on the stunning displays that were here in the last one.
