Tucson 2018

This has been the strangest Tucson of my career.  "Normally" I get here, set out to the various venues and look for things that are new or worth getting to post on the web.  This year I have been set up at 3 venues and it has just gobbled up my time and energy.  The first was the Just Minerals Event, the The New Tucson Mineral Show and finally the Tsumeb Forum.  Since January 22nd I have had only two days where I could wander off and see what the heck was/is out here in Tucson.  Hence, the lag in any serious reporting or updates.  Memo to self: Make an adjustment for 2019.

I did at least manage to make it to the Westward Look show one day while it was open.  It was incredible how many great rocks there were there.  Of particular not was a specimen on display with Rock Acquisition Group.  A Jonas mine elbaite that was simply INCREDIBLE!  It has to be close to a meter in length.  The asking price for this beast was rumored to be $18,000,000.  Let me go to the ATM.  I will be right back.

The 90 cm specimen everyone was talking about.

Collector's Edge room was also just simply filled with museum grade specimens. Golds, rhodos, elbaites, and much more were on display.  Most had P.O.R. for the prices meaning that if you had to ask you could not afford it.  But I asked once anyway on one of the remakable Sweethome Rhodos available.

15 cm rhomb of rhodochrosite on quartz - $1,250,000 the asking price.

25 cm elbaite/smoky quartz combo from Pakistan.

35 cm specimen of leaf gold from California.  This specimen used to be in the Golden Nugget Casino collection in Carson City, Nevada.

Christophe Gobin had some of the finest single crystals of carrollite I have ever seen on display in his room. Sharp crystals with mirror faces.  These are from the Kamoya South mine in Katanga, Demorcratic Rep. of the Congo.

Look at all the copper cobalt sulfide!

The finest single crystal in the group.

I have to stop a moment here and give a heap of heartfelt thanks to Tony Potucek for looking after his "Pards".  Tony knows I have been cooped up here and have only had two rare chances to connect with the infamous rolling bar here in Tucson.  So yesterday, February 7th, he called to say he and Helen and Rod Tyson had just finished lunch and wanted to drop by.  Rod was the winner this year of the American Mineral Heritage award.  He's been a prolific field collector over the years.  He and Helen also used to be set up with Mike New of Top Gem years ago and offer all sorts of wholesale minerals to folks here in Tucson.  I had not seen Helen in a number of years - at least 8 or 9 of them to be exact... Anyway the trio dropped by our rental and Rod, Tony and I had a sip of the good life from Tony's satellite mobile bar while Helen and Ronna chatted.  I love Tucson!

Ronna, Helen, Tony and Rod in the backyard here. It was a pleasant 78 degrees at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Here's a Tucson shot of Helen & Rod Tyson from 2002.  Great people!

Back to minerals.

Isaias Casanova and Geoff Krasnov had a new find of baryte from the Volcano Vein of the San Diego mine, Santa Barabara, Chihuahua, Mexico. The crystals are very glassy and chisel shaped with a pale greenish gray hue.  These guys had about 25 of them in all and I happily picked out a half dozen.  Isaias also had some specimens of crystallized jouravskite from the N'Chwaning mine.  Jouravskite has been known for many years from this mine but until this recent find was only known as thin crusts or granular masses.  Jouravskite is a hydrated calcium manganese sulfate carbonate.  It is somewhat similar in chemistry to ettringite and sturmanite.  Crystals of this mineral were mega rare.  They are now just rare and this is a likely one time find so if you're looking for another crystallized specimen to get from the Kalahari Mangnanese Field this is it.

10.5 cm specimen of baryte from the San Diego mine.

Yellow crystals of jouravskite with white xonotlite and spherical masses of acicular bultfonteinite on a 5.5 cm specimen.

More to come from Tucson 2018!
